At Puig Ubach we have a long track record in the production of a wide range of lining fabric for clothing in compliance with the broader requirements of the industry.

Garment Lining Fabrics: A Guide to Choosing the Right Material

Lining directly influences the comfort, drape, and perceived quality of a garment. Selecting the right lining fabric is therefore both a technical and an aesthetic decision.

A good lining must integrate seamlessly with the outer fabric, facilitate movement, withstand its intended use, and perform reliably during garment manufacturing and subsequent care.

What Are the Key Functions of a Garment Lining?

A lining can serve multiple purposes:

  • Facilitating the putting on and taking off of the garment.

  • Preventing direct skin contact with certain seams.

  • Enhancing drape and overall structure.

  • Protecting the inner side of the shell fabric.

  • Reducing fabric deformation.

  • Concealing internal seams and construction details.

  • Adding color, design, and brand identity.

  • Elevating the overall perception of quality.

The priority of each function depends on the garment type and its intended end use.

Main Types of Lining Fabrics

Viscose Linings

Viscose is renowned for its soft touch, fluidity, and ability to deliver a premium feel. It is frequently used in tailoring, coats, dresses, and mid-to-high-end garments.

It can be used pure or blended with other fibers to achieve specific performance traits.

Acetate Linings

Acetate-based fabrics are traditionally associated with a fluid, elegant hand-feel. They are widely used in garments where refined drape and an impeccable interior finish are desired.

Prior to selection, it is advisable to verify care conditions and compatibility with the garment’s other components.

Modal Linings

Modal is a fiber valued for its exceptional softness, lightness, and pleasant feel against the skin. Modal linings offer smooth fluidity and contribute to creating a comfortable, high-end interior.

Modal can be used alone or combined with fibers like polyester or viscose to enhance durability, stability, or manufacturing performance. It is an ideal choice for fluid garments.

Elastic Linings

Garments tailored from structured outer fabrics require a lining that moves with the body. A rigid lining can restrict comfort or negatively impact the garment's fit.

Stretch linings are particularly recommended for fitted jackets, dresses, and skirts.

Jacquard, Printed, and Fancy Linings

When the interior serves an aesthetic purpose, jacquards, stripes, custom prints, logos, or personalized motifs can be utilized. These decorative solutions help reinforce both collection concepts and brand identity.

How to Select the Ideal Lining Fabric

  1. Compatibility with the Shell Fabric: The weight and drape of both fabrics must be balanced. An overly heavy lining can alter the silhouette, while one that is too light may lack the necessary structural support.

  2. Comfort and Mobility: Tactile feel, breathability, softness, and—when needed—elasticity should align with the garment’s intended application.

  3. Manufacturing Performance: Factors such as slippage, dimensional stability, usable width, and ease of cutting and sewing must be evaluated. Proper selection minimizes issues during production.

  4. Color Fastness and Care: The lining must perform well under the garment's specified care methods. Validating color fastness, shrinkage, and technical parameters against brand specifications is essential.

  5. Traceability and Certifications: An increasing number of projects require verified documentation regarding raw materials and supply chain transparency.
